On Exhibit

Gestalt of the Berth

May 23- September 28, 2025

First Floor

Gestalt of the Berth is the culmination of the inaugural Artist-in-Residence program at Gulf Islands National Seashore. Selected artist, designer, and educator John Dougherty was tasked with forging a stronger connection between the local arts community and the park and he saw collaboration as the most effective approach.

The exhibition finds its berth in the exchange of ideas and perspectives from the diverse group of artists Doughtery invited to join him. Artwork on display spans a wide range of mediums including animation, augmented reality, alchemy, ballet, ceramics, design, drawing, embroidery, sound, Risography, and video. It also includes works inspired by a week-long stay at Ship Island, a remote barrier island off the Mississippi coast, accessible only by ferry.

The show features the work of John Dougherty and includes participating artists Nicholas Croghan, Poppy Garcia, Stoycho Hadziev, Joe Hobbs, Richard Humphries, Steve Matechik, Mia McCann, Keeley Morgan, Paul Myers, Nick Phoenix, Richard Rodriguez, and Eniko Ujj.

In Your Face: Portraits by Gila Rayberg

March 7 - September 7, 2025

Second Floor

Over the past two decades, Gila Rayberg has been increasingly captivated by portraiture. Her whimsical mosaics capture the character and emotion of each individual through the use of brilliant colors and engaging patterns.

Rayberg says, “the artworks are predominantly material driven, combining a wide variety of dishes and other would-be discarded ‘memory-ware’, alongside more traditional mosaic materials. The curves, rims, handles and rounded crockery often become defining elements within my portraits. A teacup handle may become an ear or a strand of hair; the lip of a cup, an eyelid. I love those ‘aha’ moments when the perfect shard reveals itself to me. I ponder the memory of where an object originated, who gave it to me, and other significance it may hold. Endless combinations of disparate elements come together to tell new stories & keep my mind active, while the cutting and placing of each piece keeps me physically grounded. There’s nothing I’d rather be doing, all else falls to the wayside.”

Dualities: National Sculpture Exhibition

June 20 - January 11, 2026

Second Floor

Opening Reception: June 20 from 5:00-7:00 p.m.

We all live in the tension of duality. As humans we experience the dichotomy of both the physical and metaphysical and attempt to balance along the tightrope of the tangible and intangible. The contemporary sculpture in this national survey seeks to create a bridge linking these binary concepts by connecting objective forms with subjective perception, emotion, and cognition. This exhibition features a diverse array of sculptural techniques, materials, and ideas that emphasize opposing forces constantly in flux. Included artists represent a range of perspectives from different regions across the United States and illuminate the evolving dialog between traditional and emerging processes. Artwork in the show inspires viewers to investigate these complexities and gain insights into the mysteries of dualities and the human condition.
